Erykah is still the Queen!

Untitled from Ricky on Vimeo.

So… mixed feelings about last nights show.

Have to start of by saying that Simbad, The bPm and Gilles did a great job warming up. I was singing along, shaking my booty and was generally in a really good mood and very excited about seeing Erykah again. Then, as more and more people started showing up, it some how got too crowded, too hot, people were spilling drinks all over the place, pushing and being quite rude. It made me think of the last time I saw Erykah, which was a couple of years ago in Copenhagen. Peoples attitudes in Copenhagen were completely different from the London crowds, and some how the crowds positive attitude in Copenhagen really helped to raise the whole atmosphere and spirit of the event. Oh well, I might have been standing on the wrong side of the venue, the rude peoples side, which is a shame, because I couldn’t enjoy the show fully.

However, there were some golden moments when the crowd let me be and I could get into the music, and those moments were magical. For me personally, Erykah Badu is the Queen, the sickest and slickest female artist on this planet, not just on record but when she is performing as well. And last night she really proved why she is the best. She looked hot, her performance was amazing, and she kept it real, playing a mix of both new and old songs, which I enjoyed. I even got goosebumps when they started playing “Didn’t Cha Know”…

Don’t know if any of you guys were there, but if so, feel free to leave a comment and tell me what you thought about the show.

So… Turn up for my usual monday gwanins’..

Wipe the sleep from my eyes. Switch on my laptop.

Gilles hands me the phone and says

“You’re warmin’ up for the Badu gig tonight.. Speak to this girl about the gwanins”

4 hours later the bPm, a bunch of records, 4,000 people and one of my leading inspirations waiting in the wings….

WoW…!!!

Got a sneaky little live recording, will share for the world to hear on my next Samurai FM show.. Maybe I’ll do a Badu mix?

“See You Tomorrow Gilles…”

So here I am.

Its probably best to introduce myself. I’m… well I might just leave myself un-introduced, I think I prefer the enigmatic approach to this blogging business. anyhow, I’m in the brownswood office on ‘work experience’ whatever that means these days. alas, I’m enjoying it.

But never mind all the Brownswood talk, what I’m here for is, you, the fans, like me. I came to Brownswood as a fan of the music. admittedly I have experience in the industry and I’m here because I am of some use, but I could have applied to any label, but I chose Brownswood. (it probably important to note at this point, I haven’t made a single brew, probably because I don’t ‘do brew’ as such and because Brownwood’s not that kind of office) I like Ben Westbeech, I like Jose James and I like the bubblers series. however, I think Gilles is a legend. that’s all. sometimes, to my friends who don’t like his mixing style or his Dj gigs I even defend Gilles and proclaim him as the John Peel of our generation. whether you like it or not, Gilles commitment to new music is what counts, you know? I’m not the biggest ‘death jazz’ fan for example, but the fact that it is made easily available to me is what is important.

Anyway, before this becomes a psycho fan blog, ill get back to where I was.

So I’m in the office, working, and considerably harder than if I was working for just anyone else. and my first day ends. I’ve done some interesting stuff. some pretty memorable stuff. got to hang out with Gilles and the rest of the Brownswood team. I’m not really phased though, everyone is pretty down to earth, sometimes a rarity in the music industry.

I say my goodbyes to the team, until tomorrow.

“Bye Guys, see you tomorrow. See you tomorrow Gilles” is what I said.

That’s what I said.

Until next time. Keep the boogie alive.

Benji B takeover on Future Vintage

We love radio and we listen to “Future Vintage” religiously even though its all in Dutch and there’s loads of talking. the girls always sound very excitable - would love to know what they are on about! Funny language Dutch, always sounds like they are spitting. BAD tunes though. Thats all you need to know!

Big up Melodee and er…the other one!

listen to the latest future vintage with Benji B
