Amsterdam Dance Event

September 30, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Like Wow; As you can see this might be something you’d like to book a flight or train ticket for.  Where?  To Amsterdam!  Because on that weekend it’s the Amsterdam Dance Event (and that’s the 12th year they doin’ this).  K-Space.tv and DjBroadcast.fm invite their favourite labels and artists. From Thursday through Saturday, K-Space will host the intimate K-Space Sessions where you can hear, see, enjoy and meet the artists up close and personal; It will be followed by 2 night time sessions (on Thursday & Saturday).  The price is free (good, in these hard times we’re facing) and the line-up is fire! Boom…
On Thursday night we’ll have a Brownswood Recordings party at Bar Struik with Gilles, bPm and myself. Make sure to be there early because the venue is small (but nice, been there a couple of times, enjoyed it!).
I could translate this in Dutch too but every Dutchman understands the English language (In general).
So, be a part of this interesting night and if you need more info on this go to: WWW.KSPACE.TV

See you there…

The Hop – Episode #4

September 27, 2008 · Leave a Comment

While I left The bPm at the Go Bang! (He kinda liked it I think; oh and that’s here in Brussels by the way) party to watch the McCain x Obama debate (I feel concerned..really!) and find some sleep. I have some time to post yesterday’s show which actually featured a set of my English buddy (put it online man, it was good!) but also an interview with Waajeed of the Platinum Pied Pipers (PPP, they shorten the name kind of officially said Waaj’).  Of course good music is a must these days so you can expect that too.  Check that Reuben Wilson and you’ll recognise that sample instantly, or you might prefer Black Milk’s new joint “Give The Drummer Sum” or The Grouch featuring Raphael Saadiq on the chorus… Well, it’s up to you, but it’s all in there! 53 minutes of freshness!  Maybe not as fresh as Yves Rossy’s (the FusionMan) cross channel flight; but still…

Thelonious

Well, we all know about Mos Def’s musical and acting talent; but I’ve seen him a couple of times live and I always was dissapointed.  Not really by him but more by the show; you can’t ask a man (solo) to support the whole show on his own but it’s also his job to make it the best show ever.  Every time I saw him perform in Europe he came with two deejays, both dropping wellknown classic soul tunes in between Mos Def songs, and Mos Def asking the people “Do You Know this sample?“; Most of them were so obvious; and that for 2 hours.  Mos’ will be part of the “Rock The Bells” tour in November and won’t have his band with him either; anyway…

:(

And then, you see him on Youtube performing crazy songs with Robert Glasper (like Common’s “Thelonious”) and singing all the way; which is the reason why I love Mos Def (I know he can do good shit on stage).  So please Danté, next time you come overseas make sure it’s worth the money (we pay btw) to see you perform; make it a show to remember, give us your Dilla tribute songs like this one:

Ow, and by the way, have you seen that interview with Frank (&Dank) and Dilla at the airport talking business?  Here it is; It’s fantastic!

Its finally released!

September 22, 2008 · 2 Comments

Hi guys!

As you might know, I am a huge fan of José James, and in case you didn’t know, his 12 inch single for Desire & Love (featuring the remixes made by Moodymann & Ben Westbeech) has now been released and is available in the Brownswood shop. I usually dont “pimp out” our own releases (haha), but I absolutely adore those two songs from his album “The Dreamer“, and even if Im not the biggest fan of remixes, I must say that that is not the case this time. I havent really paid too much attention to remixes in the past because Ive seen them as another way of milking out more money from a song, and Ive often felt that the remixes never really lived up to the greatness of the original version of a song. But Im putting my tail between my legs when I admit that I have been blown away by these two remixed tracks. I just feel like dancing everytime I hear Ben’s remix of Love, and I simply cant get enough of Moodymann’s version of Desire, its addictive! I don’t have a record player at home, but I am actually tempted to buy this 12″ just because of its pretty cover! (Yes, very girly of me, but I think it looks great… don’t you!?)

Anyways, if you want to have a listen to the tracks, just visit the Brownswood Myspace page. But I must warn you, you might not be able to resist the temptation of buying it once you’ve heard them…

Much Love!

Film Tip: Before The Music Dies

September 22, 2008 · Leave a Comment

On my day off I want to share this film with you (Dear Brownswood blog readers!).  I’ve talked about it a while ago on other blogs but now that it is official let’s talk about this movie called “Before The Music Dies” (you can watch the whole movie here).  It is probably the best film/documentary on music I have seen in recent years.  I’m not going to say much about it except that you must see this one badly.

Narrated by Academy Award® Winner Forest Whitaker, “Before The Music Dies” is an unsettling and inspiring look at today’s popular music industry featuring interviews and performances by Erykah Badu, Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews, Branford Marsalis, ?uestlove and a wide variety of others. The documentary film has built a passionate following as “the most important film a music fan will ever see” (XM Radio) by providing “a balanced overview of the state of the rock scene of America” (The Wall Street Journal) and adding “passion to the eternal debate about the industry” (The New York Times). Last year, “Before The Music Dies” filmmakers Andrew Shapter and Joel Rasmussen walked away from traditional Hollywood distribution to instead pursue a large-scale grassroots release with B-Side Entertainment. Since its release in November 2006, the film has screened over 200 times in over 130 North American markets with hundreds of additional events anticipated worldwide during 2007. Go to this site to learn more about the film, where you can see it, ways you can own it, and – most importantly – how you can get involved in sharing it with others.

Live @ The Do-Over

September 22, 2008 · Leave a Comment

His name is Jeremy Ellis or some might call him Ayro.  He’s part of the Ubiquity family and is one hell of a genius.  Recently he was the guest artist at one of the “Summer Sundays” at The Do-Over club in Los Angeles.  The club is known for their guests shows such as J-Rocc’s set and Flying Lotus’ set, both are still available for download somewhere on the internet (And so is Ayro’s…).  The night is hosted by Aloe Blacc and it always looks packed! (On pictures at least…)  I catched this footage through my boys Onda Sonora, and they actually found it on DJ Day’s blog; It’s a small world right?

The Hop

September 20, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Like every Friday morning (Thank God it’s friday) I post my weekly show here; It’s broadcasted live (Thursday evening) on airwaves and on the internet.  When I have guests (in my second hour, locals most of the time) it’s always a timing dilemma or, how do you fit 20 tracks in 50min?!  Well, yesterday I had that kind of problem.  You might hear it sometimes;  There’s some new tracks by Gagle, M.I.A. & Kid Sublime and more actually. Enjoy!
