The Hop – Episode #9

October 31, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Last week I couldn’t make it and I asked my homeboy JC to take over my show for once (I was in Amsterdam with Gilles & bPm remember?);  This week I’m back on my radio (Studio Brussel) and it actually felt good, I really enjoyed my show last night (I was motivated like hell) and I say that because after 9 years there’s a certain routine in what I do.  Anyway, you can download this episode by clicking on the picture; A lotta new music by the Menahan Street Band, a very nice track of Q-Tip with Norah Jones, some Belgian producer I like called Weedy and many more…Enjoy!

And I just uploaded “Part 2” for your listening pleasure with more goodies such as Paper Plane Project, old/new material by Heavy, a very nice disco-esque track by Orgone with Noelle Scaggs (The Rebirth), Souled, Jazztronik and Janelle Monae… Check it out, it’s here, it’s now. ;)

Brazil and DJ Nuts

October 31, 2008 · Leave a Comment

After listening to Worldwide I thought it would be cool to talk about that Brazilian deejay I heard about, his name is DJ Nuts.  I met him at the Brasilintime event at Amsterdam’s Paradiso (I was the deejay for the afterparty) and he seemed to be a cool guy (I think he had his family with him too).  I was introduced to his mixtapes full of unbelievable Brazilian music and a while ago Nuts decided to put them available on his blog.  He also has a couple of videos where he talks about his record collection (especially the Brazilian flavors of course) and although I don’t understand too much what he says it sounds interesting :) .

Obrigado Dj Nuts

I can’t pretend to be an expert on the work of William Claxton.

But.. I’m sure, you’ll recognize his images before his name.

Carl Craig VERSUS…. Les Siècles Orchestra

October 29, 2008 · 3 Comments

I can’t stop playing Francesco Tristiano – The Melody (C2 Beatless edit)

It sounds amazing… and adds a little erm….? “je ne c’est quoi” to a thumping house set.

So? When I saw this one advertised a little while ago. I was envious of anyone that lived in Paris….

Click on the image to watch Les Siècles Orchestra perform Carl Craig’s music with a full orchestral setup at this year’s Versus event at the Cité de la Musique in Paris. BASICALLY.. Carl Craig handed over some tracks to pianist Francesco Tristano, who arranged the music. François-Xavier Roth directs the orchestra and there’s a new piece which Craig co-wrote with the elusive Berlin producer Moritz Von Oswald… which I think is on this album…

IN NEED OF A COPY….!!!!

I’m in awe of Carls determination to stretch the boundaries of techno…. and prove that electronic beats are as much “music” as violins or cellos.

ReSPECT…!!

Mtv Online

October 29, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Mtv decided to put their videos online (all of them) on the new website Mtvmusic.com.  I tested a couple of names and was really surprised to see the availability.  It’s good to see they finally decided to do that…big up Mtv (now, if you could give us more music videos instead of reality shows, that would be very nice).

Miles’ boxset

October 28, 2008 · 1 Comment

Ok, so you guys remember I posted already a while ago the release of the Miles Davis 50th Anniversary “Kind Of Blue” Boxset right?  Well, now is the time to remind you to buy it; it’s an unbelievable boxset and ok, I know it’s pricy but’s it’s never expensive enough (for what it is).  Go get it at your local recordstore and enjoy the book (splendid pictures inside), the dvd and the double cd.  And of course, a copy of the “Kind Of Blue” vinyl (blue it is). This is the Bible of Jazz music, a must have in your collection.

World Report: Japan

October 26, 2008 · 1 Comment

I really want to talk about the independent record label called “Show Tiku Bai Record“; founded by Hunger (an Emcee from the fresh group “Gagle) in 2003, their goal is to provide opportunities to artists (meaning release stuff) and promote them to the fullest.  Well, I’ve seen a couple of nice releases coming this way lately and that’s when I really started to pay attention to it.  7″ releases by Mitsu The Beats are still available (they are bangin’) and there’s more on it’s way.  Hunger and MONOm.i.c. have a dope record coming out by the name of “Jappcats/Good Problems“; “Jappcats” is based on Madlib’s “Jazzcats” and is very funky.  There’s a video that goes with it:

The label is also strong in releasing mix series.  DJ Mu-R’s “Definition” mixes or Mitsu The Beats’ “Roses” serie are beautiful things to have in your collection and definitely a good example of what the spirit of the people behind this label sound like.  Watch this to really understand what I mean:

I am looking forward to the future of this label.  Jazzy Sport does the distribution and that’s of course no wonder; “Show Tiku Bai Record” is one of these labels we need in this music industry.  Independent as F*ck.

Pêche Noire by Appletree Records

October 26, 2008 · 1 Comment

Since I’m on Appletree Records and that every support is needed nowadays, I think it’s my due to promote this superb project on Brownswood. It’s all Family and I’m proud to be part of it:

Appletree producers Beau Love, Louis Bordeaux and Sotu the Traveller embarked on a journey to southern France. On Beau Love’s initiative the three beat conductors packed a van full with all the equipment needed to conduct some massive beat making. Along with sound engineer Elio “Delta Beats” Debets and Appletree CEOs they set off to the scenic village of Esclauzels. Arriving at the picturesque cottage, with a great view of nature’s finest work, Esclauzels was the perfect scene for a week filled with, relaxation, creativity, joy, inspiration and jamming.

started making music together. The three producers got back to basic in the improvised studio, built on the spot with Elio. There, on the in the mountains of Midi-Pyrenees, for the first time ever Beau Love, Louis Bordeaux and Sotu the Traveller. The beautiful nature surroundings, fun, good French wine and food, long nights, philosophizing, jamming and spending a week with people you don’t know too well and getting to know them better, are all ingredients for a diversified, palette of musical beats.
The fruit of this labour is called Pêche Noire and is released as a free download. New Orleans based designer Nessim Higson was kind enough to create the artwork for this release.

The Pêche Noire project displays how 3 producers with various styles can come together and create a consistent homogeneous album. Yet, still compliment the individual producers strong aspects and leave room for each one of them to shine. It consists of some out takes from late-night jam sessions, tracks made together, some solo joints, and even a magical 15 minute jam!

You can download the whole thing (for free) here.

Sleep Walker @ Jazz Café

October 24, 2008 · 1 Comment

The guys @ Nujazzspirit told me about the nice performance Sleep Walker (straight from Tokyo, Japan) gave at the Batofar in Paris. Now, they inform me that the band will be performing the Jazz Café in London on Sunday.  Make sure to be a part of this show next Sunday as it will be very funky I think.  This is footage of their Paris’ performance:

By the way, make sure to check their releases coz they’re Hot!
Thanks for sharing the info Nas (@ nujazzspirit).
