London Weekender

January 27, 2009 · 2 Comments

bpmpic.jpg
So, on friday I took the Eurostar from Brussels to London, (coming from Amsterdam where I had a night at the famous Jimmy Woo club) and I can’t describe the feeling I have inside when arriving on British soil, but it’s definitely positive.  Calling up the boys from Finsbury Park to eat some pizza then straight to East Village where Simbad invited us to go; Karizma, Afronaught, Ladybugz, Phil Asher, Benji B and of course Simbad on the decks for a very nice night.  I finally had the chance to meet Nik Weston from Mukatsuku and saw TY again, told me about that other night called CDR; should go there next time to discover new talent.  Then on saturday, the reason I came to London town; of course the Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards going down at Cargo. The night was sold out and security tight (and the guestlist) and honestly I feel bad for the ones who couldn’t get in because they really missed some major madness.  I was deejaying for Stacy Epps that night and I really enjoyed that, she’s good on stage, a real hiphop attitude.  Crowd wasn’t ready to go completely crazy on her set (it was still early..) but the ones checking her out knew about her music.  Right after, we had a set by Laurent Garnier and I still have to ask him what that french hiphop record was in the beginning, just curious.  What can I say about Jazzanova’s live set with Paul Randolph?  That was a pleasure for the ears.  What can I say about The Mitchell Trio with Marlena Shaw performing “California Soul”? That was a major pleasure for the ears and the eyes.  I was in shock watching her do that song during her soundcheck, like wooooow.

I’ve seen Mama!Milk do a great set, they are just great people, elegant and sweet; the way they master the contrabass and accordeon is magnificent.  Jazz lives in Japan, and I can’t wait to go back.  After that, I missed a couple of things to see, but enjoyed talking to the different artists backstage.  Had a nice chat with Floating Points, he’s a funny man, and he’s still not on Warp (lol); and the french boys of the Worldwide family were hilarious.  The funniest thing is probably seeing people the day before at East Village dancing all night in front of you and discover the day after at Cargo that they are living right around the corner in Brussels…life is a coincidence sometimes.  Much respect to Gilles and his team for making this possible, I’ve seen him running from here to there, how does he do it?

The Hop – Episode #17

January 26, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Back for another show; with a few bangers on it, start the show with a live version of Jose James with Jef Neve on piano recorded @ the studio in Brussels, very nice; then I got this nice upcoming producer called RLP from Japan and a fine remix by Astronote of Mayer Hawthorne’s new tune.  Couldn’t forget Exile on this, he’s coming strong with his new album and so does Dorian Concept (watch him perform at the WorldWide Awards).  Got some Exchange Bureau too, love them cats, their music is sensational and Tempa sent me a Sa-Ra joint he remixed, really like it.  It’s good to see so many good things coming from the UK.  The Real II Reel joint Floating Points used for his banger and another disco joint called Gonzalez. Ow, and make sure to check Jay-Z with the Lefties Soul Connection called “Jay’s Soul Connection”, beautiful mash-up for your funky parties out there; and last but not least what do you think of that Ty & Motet collabo? When the robots go to war….

Elan Mehler here, thought I’d drop some music we recorded in the Blaue Hall in Switzerland, where I first met Gilles Peterson. The real straight ahead thing, featuring Max Goldman on Drums and Tod Hedrick on Bass, The standard When I Fall in Love by Victor young, Thelonious Monk’s Bemsha Swing and an old Gospel tune, Yes Indeed by Sy Oliver.  Also check out, Gilles’ Myspace page to hear “54th Leap” from the new album coming out March 16th.  Also, on my myspace page you can hear “I Want to Leave You” featuring Adam Mcbride-Smith, also set to come out on the new album.

SOTU Diggin’ vol.1

January 19, 2009 · 1 Comment

To add to my week of mischevious gwanins’… I’ve managed to add working at Sounds of the Universe aka Soul Jazz on Thursday and Fridays.

and… as inevitable as it is? I end up diggin’ through the selections new & old!!

and instead of allowing the gems that I come across on  a weekly basis, to fall into my record box for the odd play here or there? I’ve decided to write a weekly on the movements insiiiide each week… and spread some light on my weekly discoveries.

A lowdown on the not so new dicoveries and re-discoveries on here.

and…. the new arrivals on Who is the bPm?

1. Fela Kuti – Monkey Banana / Excuse O

Perfect…!! But then Fela always is!! The last track Mr Grammarticalogyisationalism Is The Boss… is amazing.

Sit down… turn on some Fela and fight through thoughts.

2. Loft Classics Volume Two

The best thing about working in a record shop… is coming across music or cd’s by guys that i’m not too familiar with and then getting into their music as I’ve been told I would do.

Loft Classics and David Mancuso belong to that category…!! An amazing cd, with 9 surefire disco / funk dancefloor smashers.

3. Selda – Selda

This one provides a loada recognizable samples for a load of tracks on Stonesthrow… and completely understandably!!!

Every track hits you with a knee jerk “this cd’s wicked” reaction… Turkish Folk Rock??

Apparently it’s a protest record? About what? I have no idea?

4. Theo Parrish – Fallin’ Up (Carl Craig remix)

Been on the lookout for this one for a little while… This tracks reminds me of pelting it up the motorway in the direction of Southport last summer…. and bashing out Carl Craigs  C2 Sessions on the way!! Carl Craig and Theo Parrish combining forces…. how much more evidence do you need on Detroit tech?!

5. Madlib the Beat Konducta : Vol 1-2 Movie Scenes

Don’t know how I missed this one originally, but with 5 -6 about to drop. Thought I’d go back and check 1-2…

These tapes before, were for the listening pleasure of the likes of Erykah Badu, Talib Kweili and Jay Electronica… and anyone else who could get hold of a copy. This was the first in the series to expose little snippets of sorcery to the public listening pleasure.

MADLIB…. The Coltrane of the beats?

The Hop – Episode #16

January 17, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Dear aficionados,

This is last thursday’s episode with music by the young and talented Dorian Concept (watch him perform next saturday at the Worldwide Awards in London, Cargo that is…), a piece of Exile’s new album “Radio“, nice concept album. A very nice edit by my local homeboys Onda Sonora, hear them chop Diana Ross‘ “One Love”.  Of course, can’t forget Q-Tip with Norah Jones, that’s just my favorite track of the year, some reggae vibes by Dillinger & Dennis Brown. Chimpo kills it by remixing Minnie Riperton dubstep stylee.  Going a bit uptempo with Atjazz and Creative Swing Alliance with Pablo Valentino (love that joint), some d&b by Kjell (of course, what a Gil-Scott Heron remix) and TC & JakesGaractic Mellow on Jazzy Sport of course, I must play that joint… to end with Exchange Bureau and Donald Byrd “Fancy Free”… well:

Explosion at Brownswood…

January 15, 2009 · 2 Comments

So? I was preparing to go live for the first time with the Peterson at Brownswood… Started making a coffee on your standard “coffee maker”.

Left it to do it’s thing?

AND? The coffee exploded!! Everywhere… coffee bits all over the laptop, wall, cd’s, vinyl EVERYWHERE!!

Scared the shit out of me… and created a needless mess!!

If anyone can help explain…?

Anyway..!!! It meant no pre-show coffee at midnight, so had to drink the shit that comes out of the Radio One vendor thingy.

Luckilly for you guys… there’s no need to stay awake till 4 in the morning… you can always listen again on the BBC iPlayer.

… even tho’ some of the massive are still burning that apres midnight candle!!!

Shouts too… Dayo (Brownswood Board), DJ Garfld, Michelle aka the Fragil, Dave Mac, Rypy, Karim, Gavin all amongst the live listener massive, giving us the fuel to stay awake (the coffee didn’t) on Facebook and the Brownswood Message Board.

Special big up goes out to the Sophie ‘dem and her MC crew, raving it out to the show in ”the BeNeLux Region”.

Soon to get the live twitter / messageboard business up and running… so we can all chat together.

Another 25 to go, home by 5…. In Soul Jazz by 11.

Come in and say yo… there every Thursday and Friday.

The Hop

January 12, 2009 · Leave a Comment

A new year, let’s hope it will be as good musically as 2008; We had the chance to hear beautiful artists (and one of them is definitely Jose James).
This is The Hop, and this week nothing but great music on the show.  I start off with Mood Schula, who’s from Seoul, South-Korea (and to those who don’t know yet, they got some heat over there), then I got this “Get Em High” Kanye joint remixed by Boston producer Insight (remember Brick Records?), not bad at all! Really, you need to check for Exiles album when it comes out on Plug Research end of this month ‘coz it’s bangin’ like that.  Green Lantern’s remix of Jay-Z’s “Brooklyn Go Hard” is definitely worth listening to as it has the “Sound Bwoy Burrell” break in it, a true BK anthem. Jazzy Sport never sleeps as it drops Garactic Mellow, very soulful stuff with nice drums programmed by Grooveman Spot (of course); a song from Q-Tip to Obama, a beautiful DJ Day remix of Marvin Gaye on Mpm Records and then of course the Floating Points x Real To Reel banger “Love Me Like This” definitely NOT on Warp Records, just to make things extra clear.  Also, check that new release (soon) on Nik Weston’s Mukatsuku, a very nice edit of Grant Green’s “Let The Music Take Your Mind“; and definitely look out for this London cat called Digital Freakswing, that’s my myspace tip of the week (I guess)… Click & Enjoy!
