Have you heard?
I like these cats; the Hawthorne Headhunters are no other than Stoney Rock, Ced No and Pro Mic.
“The project was conceived in Ced’s Studio in that special place between Long Beach and Los Angeles – Hawthorne, California. The St. Louis natives Ced and Veto, and Seattle transplant, Proh Mic locked it down under the shine of Hollywood Park and created some sounds in the great traditions of musical heavyweight projects such as Funkadelic, Headhunters, Soulquarians, Native Tongues Posse and Bloomfield, Kooper, Stills’ Super Session. Crossing the lines between the Southern influenced tastes of the producer/singer/rapper Stoney Rock, keyboard and studio controller Ced No, fused with the next level northern bounce of rapper/producer Proh Mic, the HH’s is at the crossroads of funk, soul, jazz and hip hop from players already years deep into the game. Look for the album to drop later this year on the new HVW8 records imprint.”
Can’t wait to hear some extra gems from these guys…
Yesterday I broadcasted the GP Worldwide night on my show The Hop; It was a bit of a cut & paste thing to get everything in 60 minutes but I think it sounds good the way it is. The first 10 minutes is a piece of my opening set, right after that Gilles takes over with great Brazilian flavors, I love that music. Straight into Nicola Conte’s set, time to relax a bit, peaceful piece of music; then back to Gilles for more music, that was actually towards the end of his show. And finally end with Alex Barck going deep and talks about his album for a minute. Well, I hope you guys will enjoy this as much as I did and don’t forget to spread this around the blogs and friends.
So? As we remember the great lengths that John Martyn went expand the musical spectrum….
…..it becomes time to celebrate Martyn of a different kind.
I managed to squeeze Martyns new album “Great Lengths” out of him a couple of weeks ago.
It was a little upfront, so i’ve been sitting on it a little while and listening as closely as one can to it.
Well? It’s no secret that Martyn is one my most favored electronic producers at the moment… and his refixes of “Epileptic” by Shut up and Dance, TRG’s “Broken Heart” and Steve Spaceks “Your a Star” were all up there as my favorites of 2008.
In fact my obsession with anything that he touched reached so far, that at one point Gilles was spreading the rumour that I was in fact Martyn.
Well? I’m not… but I wish i shared his soundscape!!!
The forthcoming album “Great Lengths” on his own imprint 3024 is for sure a must have album…..!!!
Martyn places himself amongst the new breed of electronic hierachy that includes Shackleton, Appleblim, Kode9, Burial, Skream, Benga, Flying Lotus and any other new generation don that you care to mention.
Its hard to pick out the stand out track…. It truthfully is an album that must be enjoyed from start to finish, and is seemless as an exploratory mixtape.
SUBLIME!!!
Check the mix below that Martyn did for Skreams Stella Sessions show on Rinse FM, it includes album tracks Natural Selection and Vancouver as well as the afforementioned Epileptic and Broken
1. Martyn – Natural Selection (3024)

I just got a message from a friend telling me that some people broke in and ravaged the Daptone studio last night. As you might know, Daptone Records is the home of great artists such as…
Please take your time and read the blog post below, written by Gabriel Roth from Daptone:
Friends and associates,As you may have heard through the grapevine by now, Daptone was broken into last night. Unfortunately, there was a lot of equipment (mics, pre-amps, monitors, turntables, guitars, amps, computers, etc.) stolen and damaged. It is going to take us a while to go through everything and take full stock of what was stolen, and we are not supposed to touch anything until the cops come back to collect fingerprints so we can only guess what’s missing from some mic drawers and cabinets.
And, no, we did not have insurance. We had been shopping around with different companies earlier this month but had not signed a check, so nothing was insured. We are working on replacing the gate in front, installing an alarm system, and getting insurance, but it is President’s day so it’s not going as quickly as we would have liked.
Nydia’s computer was stolen (which wasn’t backed up) and the modems/ phone system was ripped out, so we’ll be relatively out of commission for a few days.
I would like to ask for everyone’s help first in keeping an eye out for all of our stuff showing up on ebay/craigslist/local music shops, and secondly (and more realistically) keeping an eye out for good deals on headphones, mics, pre-amps, etc. I could really use a heads up on any kind of studio package for sale or studio equipment to be possibly bought or borrowed as soon as possible. We have a session scheduled for Friday to lay down some music for (I know this sounds
surreal) Rod Stewart, and I’m going to have to get the studio running by then. I know I’m going to need to find headphones, cables, mics, and pre-amps by then. I’m not sure what else yet.
Upon first glance we are definitely missing:
Fender Super Guitar Amp in case
Fender Deluxe Guitar Amp
A whole bunch of headphones and wires
Nydia’s HP laptop computer
One Desktop MacIntosh Computer
One Purple Audio API style lunchbox with
four Purple Audio Biz mic pre-amps
2 Yamaha NS10 monitors
Vintage Harmony Rocket Guitar
One steel string acoustic guitar
Martin Tenor sax in a gig bag
Technics 1200 turntable
Ion USB turntable
Teac Receiver/stereo amp
Sony dual deck CD burner/player
All of our modem/phone system stuff was ripped out and taken.
A whole bunch of condensor and dynamic microphones (I still need to
figure out exactly what’s missing)
The power supply for my Trident console was tossed and the board was
moved (probably not gently) so the status of that is still questionable.
A baldwin organ was tossed and is probably broken.
Lacie External hard drive
Over the next few days, as we sort out the rubble, we are going to
figure out what else we lost.
We are putting in a roll down front gate, alarm system, and finally
getting our insurance happening this week. We are also going to hire
a security guard to watch the house for tonight as the cops and alarm
guy seemed pretty confident that they will be back with a truck now
that they’ve seen what’s in here.
Thanks for keeping eyes open for us. AND PLEASE PASS THIS MESSAGE
ALONG TO ANYONE YOU THINK MIGHT BE ABLE TO HELP US.
Thankfully, we all still have our health, ambition, tape machines, and
sense of humor in tact. You can slow us down, but you can’t stop
us. Sleep well knowing we here at Daptone will continue to…
Keep putting Soul up,
Gabriel Roth
You know what to do people! Keep an eye & ear out… any dodgy gear going for sale in the NY / Brooklyn area, then make sure they don’t fit the list… if they do? Holla at the Daptones Records…
Friday the 13th, usually known for bad things butGilles Peterson Worldwide night organised byHet Depot in Leuven, Belgium (shout out to my man Mike) was fan-tas-tic! Studio Brussel, the radiostation that hosts my show was part of the night as we recorded the whole night and will be broadcasted next thursday on The Hop of course. What to expect? It was a night with beautiful music; Nicola Conte with band was really nice, I like the guy, never met him before and was surprised by his personality. Gilles dropped some nice tunes, man, I really loved that Laos track, sounded like 4Hero to me but that’s not a negative thing, and always nice to hear new tracks by Omar and lots of Brazilian music, you know I love that sh*t. Then came Alex Barck for Jazzanova, like wow, he was going deep, maybe too deep sometimes (for the crowd) but definitely down with the Coltrane x Italoboys track, when that one drops it’s over, very nice track. The night was sold-out a month ago and the people who came down to enjoy beautiful music were served I think; the type of parties you’d like to see more around the corner.
Props to my main man Alex ofOn-Point for doing the little interviews for me, Mike for doin’ it, Peter for bringing the boys over and big up to everybody buying tickets in advance.
This is it! Another week, another show, with bangers! I told you about South-Korea, Seoul is doin’ it; the guys of Inside are on the roll with gigs and (definitely) beats, check out that beat by Simo!!! In the same vibe I put a joint by Brazilian cat Afta-1 on Mpm called “Nightlight“, make sure to go get that 7″ at your local recordstore, it’s fat. I really like that “Watermelon Man” edit by Kenny Dope, an already classic tune by Herbie Hancock I know but the way it’s flipped is just fine for gigs; and so is Q-Tip’s “Move” of course, very nice Jackson 5 sample chopped by master J Dilla. Last week I saw Ugly Duckling doing a great show in Brussels so I thought it necessary to spin a joint by the guys, they are actually really good performers, interaction, fun, jokes, everything to make a perfect night with these guys. Mulatu Astatke and The Heliocentrics, that’s the perfect combo right now, really expecting the album to drop soon and to see them perform next month. And yes, the “Wu” is back with Raekwon, a track that should see daylight on his next album, this joint features Method Man & Ghostface so you know it’s good!!! Let’s go on with a Flying Lotus old & exclusive track called “Disco Balls #2” right into Buraka Som Sistema with Diplo, you know, it’s that “A Milli” joint called “Um Milhao“, I love it. But what I love most right now is probably Martyn’s “Right Star“, very nice. When is that album coming out? Anyway, there’s more to listen to over here, just click:
…because I am so excited about tonights session at Worldwide Underground that I am going slightly insane. I even tried building my own time machine so I could make time go just a little bit faster. Obviously it didn’t quite go as I planned since I am still sitting here. But nevertheless, it is safe to say that nothing in this universe can stop me from going!
For you who are a bit less informed, Bullion is gracing us with his presence tomorrow at Bar Rumba, and I have to admit that I died a little inside when I found out (in a good way of course!!). I absolutely love “Get Familiar” (which is featured on Brownswood Bubblers 3, if you don’t have it, shame on you!), not to mention “Pet Sounds: In The Key Of Dee” which is kinda short but oh so very sweet, the remix of Mr. Beatnik’s “I Know All The Bitches” is one of my favourite tracks from 2008, and yes, I could go on for ever really. Check out his MySpace for some free mixes (I would recommend the “Mixed Up In Love” to get you in the right mood, especially since it was Valentines day on Saturday)
So people, what ever plans you have for tonight, re-schedule! I don’t care if it is raining, snowing or if fire is shooting out from the sky, you will be doing youself an injustice to miss this. It starts at 9pm at Bar Rumba, get on the facebook list for concessions, and I am hoping to see you all there!
Ame, he’s probably one of the most vinylminded dudes I know around (you might know the name since he was the guy doing the original Dilla Donuts mix). He’s a true cratedigger and sells and trades records with people like Madlib, J-Rocc and others but also to Dan The Beatman, you know, the guy compiling the Dusty Fingers compilations. He’s part of the Antwerp based crewAfterhoursand they were the kings of the mixtapes (man, i miss tapes..). I did a couple with the guys and they were available everywhere, they had a good distribution all over the country and beautiful artworks, mostly done by Sozy One, from Brussels (you might know his latest work for Carhartt). These are straight souvenirs for me (while i’m typing) and I still can’t understand how fast this era dissapeared, no tapedecks, no tapes (Maxwell, TDK…), Sony Walkman, you know, mixtapes were a part of Hip Hop culture. Getting nostalgic, anyway, my buddy Ame just started his own online recordstore and I wanted to show him some support. Expect lots of original material which means super original prices haha. “I used to sell mixtapes but now I’m an ….” – The Nonce
This was recorded at the Henry Fonda Theater, April 4, 2004, on the first night of the Madvillain/Jaylib tour for Madvillainy. Madlib & J. Rocc had performed Jaylib songs live, but this was the first show with J. Dilla, who had just moved to Los Angeles and joined the tour without being announced on the flyers.
Another unannounced guest late into the set was Common. The voices you hear are B+ & Melo-D, who recorded this set.
As we all know the T-Shirts compliment the muic… here’s the latest edition!!
Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancey, the mother of the late James “J Dilla” Yancey, is currently battling the same disease that took her son’s life. Dough from this tee goes to Ma Dukes.
