Classic moment

June 30, 2009 · 6 Comments

This is a classic moment @ the Brownswood office; we were talking on the Jackson case and his music and then Gilles came up with this Jacksons record, I had to share this video with you guys.  It’s Gilles at his best!

Don’t you agree?
What is your favorite Michael Jackson record by the way?

RIP Michael Jackson

Following the sad news, we thought we’d post this awesome recording of Michael, Randy and Janet jamming an early demo of ‘Don’t stop till you get enough’ in a home studio with what sounds like very basic equipment and it still sounds fresh!

Revolutionary Jazz Cover Art 1960 -78…

Freedom book cover newx

The momentum of the 1960s civil rights movement and the explosion of Rock music and the underground press in that decade impacted Jazz in amazing ways, both musically and culturally. Years before Punk, musicians like John Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders, Sun Ra, Don Cherry, The Art Ensemble of Chicago and others took control of their work by recording, releasing and distributing their music themselves, often in runs as low as 500 copies. As a result, Jazz music got a whole new look.

The record sleeves of this era (roughly 1965-1979) are as iconic and historically unique as the music itself, which, in the wake of innovations by Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor, boldly abandoned tonal anchors for the wilder shores of improvisation, incorporating Gospel, Asian, Rock and electronic influences. Soul Jazz Records has issued many releases relating to this music, and Freedom, Rhythm and Sound is the first ever collection of this fascinating goldmine of album art, which represents the first wave of inspired independent production within popular music.

The book provides a large introduction contextualizing the music and artwork, as well as interviews with many of the people involved. Alongside the musicians mentioned above, these include Kelan Phil Cohran, Charles Tyler, Steve Reid, Mary Lou Williams, Horace Tapscott, Lloyd McNeil, Phil Ranelin, Marcus Belgrave, Paris Smith, Jayne Cortez, Joe McPhee, Weldon Irvine, Shamek Farrah, Cecil McBee, Stanley Cowell, Tribe, The Last Poets, The Pharoahs and many others. 30 years on, their works are exemplary in their untamed DIY energy and graphic boldness.

It’s no secret that I’m very partial to my disco electro business…

You can imagine…?!

T.B.H? It’s a kinda guilty pleasure?

I’m thnking of thick humid nights, sea air, funktion one speakers, fish and wondering how i’m spinning out to “relight my fire”?

my neck hurts?!!!

part one on the d/l now….

HF023

are the one’s for me right now.

Their first EP HF21… (as it says my itunes?) was n experimental blend of sounds and arrangment….  “maybes” has been dropped in mixes by DJ’s as fat apart as Hell & Simbad.

HF023 – Sketch on Glass is the perfect compliment…

I played Fifty Mile View last night at Life… was a wicked session….

Really enjoyed the set my Soulgeance –> a mean little combo between Fulgeance and Dj Soulist

The EP is out now…. and there’ a track “manana” on the upcoming Brownswood Bubblers vol.4

and also shouts to Shuya Okino who dropped “Boujis Boujis” is a shared selection  in my box as well as Ashley Beedle and seemingly Phil Ashers..

…. and while we’re on it.

subway lpnew copy
